With concerns mounting over how the country can conduct elections during a pandemic and Democrats pressing for alternatives to in-person voting, President Trump has begun pushing a false argument that has circulated among conservatives for years — that voting by mail is a recipe for fraud.
“Mail ballots, they cheat,” Mr. Trump said at the White House on Tuesday afternoon. “Mail ballots are very dangerous for this country because of cheaters. They go collect them. They are fraudulent in many cases. They have to vote. They should have voter ID, by the way.”
The truth is, that voting fraud cases of recent decades involving mail or absentee ballots, have ONLY ever involved Republican candidates.
One of the most recent examples was the race in North Carolina’s Ninth Congressional District in 2018, when an operative who rounded up absentee ballots for the Republican candidate, Mark Harris, was charged with election fraud. This practice is known as ballot harvesting.
And there was also a West Virginia postal carrier pled guilty to mail and election fraud after admitting he changed the political affiliation on multiple voter ballots from Democrat to Republican.
Thomas Cooper, 47, admitted to attempted election fraud and injury to the mail. Cooper held a contract with the U.S. Postal Service to pick up mail in three towns in Pendleton County. Per a statement from the Department of Justice, the county clerk found absentee ballot requests from eight voters that were tampered with a black ink pen, five of which had their party affiliation switched to Republican. Three others that had their affiliation already set to Republican were altered but did not have their political party changed.
Trump’s campaign knocks on a million doors a week. Biden’s knocks on zero. Trump and the Republican National Committee started deploying mask-wearing field staffers and volunteers to the streets in June. The GOP quickly ramped up and now claims more than a million doors a week despite Covid-19 surges across the country, including in swing states like Arizona. Trump Victory has over 1,500 full-time staffers across 23 states, and it has required staffers to read “Groundbreakers: How Obama’s 2.2 Million Volunteers Transformed Campaigning in America,” a close look at Obama’s 2008 and 2012 ground games. The RNC says they will add an additional 1,000 people by the end of September to focus on doors and get out the vote.
Republicans say their door-knocking dominance could make a difference in November, since in-person conversations have long been considered the most effective type of voter contact. But why?
Reminding voters to fill out their ballot and then collecting them — or “ballot catching,” as some field organizers call it — is one of the most critical programs on any campaign. Door knocking provides very valuable intelligence on voter involvement, and allows organizers to identify, and then ‘take on’ the critical task of providing ballots to their supporters and mailing them in for them. In many swings states a handful of votes can make a crucial difference.
This precisely how Trump plans to win the election. His claims about mail-in voting is blatant crocodile tears and designed to mislead his opponents. In fact, it is precisely how he intends to win the election – with a massive door-to-door effort to effectively pile in a bunch of mail-in votes in advance of the election itself. They intend to use the reduction in voting stations, and the presence of the COVID pandemic to entice their base to vote and vote early via mail-in votes administered by his door-to-door knocking campaigners.
Winning elections is not accomplished by pollsters, it is done by organizing voters and driving the ‘vote’ home. Trump has this licked, Biden does not. Democrats beware. The polls are once again leading Democrats to hubris and arrogance. Trump is fooling them… and Democrats have no idea what is happening on the ground in swing states (especially).
