Hillary’s real problem is Syria, not Benghazi

Did you see the movie 13 hours, that just came out? Was there even a hint of Hillary being responsible for the attack? Or even lack of defense of a CIA compound? I know movies twist facts, but even accounting for that, I came out of the movie, pretty sure that what the republicans were trying to pin on Hillary was ridiculous. But – yes BIG BUT – Syria is a whole different issue, and actually Benghazi IS the clue to the screw up in Syria. And Hillary, more than anyone else, is directly responsible for America’s debacle in Syria.

First of all, let’s set a few things straight. The main mission of the CIA compound in Benghazi was to round up arms from Libyan rebels (that the U.S. had provided them), and put them on a ship in Benghazi port, and deliver them down the road (if you will), or up the Sea to the rebels fighting to topple the Assad regime. Again, if you see the movie, you don’t quite understand the undertones (just like the movie Argo never explained what was really happening behind the scenes in Tehran). But “Benghazi” was all about Syria.

And, yes, the CIA was secretly arming – guess who? – ISIS! You see those pictures of ISIS marching into Syrian towns … yes, its American Humvees, American Guns… no denying it…its right in the photos. The narrative used by the U.S. administration is that they raided army depots in Iraq and grabbed American arms from army barracks that were ‘conveniently’ vacated when ISIS came to town.

But, everyone knows that ISIS was made up of all these groups being trained by the U.S. and they were armed to the hilt by the CIA; and financed by Turkey and Saudi Arabia – and guided by Israel. In two years of U.S. ‘bombing’ ISIS, absolutely nothing of consequence ever happened, and it’s taken the Russians, Iranians, Syrians and Hezbollah to actually get the job done. America’s plan to topple Assad has gone badly wrong; and it’s a huge humiliation for the planners i.e. Hillary Clinton.

If Hillary wins the Presidency, I fully expect the U.S. (along with Turkey etc.) to invade Syria, and use whatever is left of ISIS as an excuse to do so, now that it looks like the whole plan to create a second Jihadist state like Saudi Arabia has gone defunct. But by then, you never know, ISIS might shift allegiances and actually join the Syrians! From where I sit, it looks like ISIS was led down a blind alley by its Turkish, Saudi, Israeli, and American masters…and needs to find new sponsors.

But, the story doesn’t end there. The real issue is the massive humanitarian price paid by Hillary’s policies. There are over 4 million refugees, 400,000 dead …all because of Hillary’s concept of how to topple Assad. It’s a massive humanitarian disaster. Massive. I really don’t think even “we” the Iranian-American community (with everything that we’ve gone through) can fully appreciate the scale of the devastation in Syria…. for Syrians. Its horrific.

And to top it off, going beyond America’s Syrian humiliation, and the Syrian humanitarian disaster – is the massive strategic consequence of this policy. American allies: Turkey and Saudi Arabia have been badly bruised. Turkey basically has a civil war on its hands, and could be torn apart. Saudi Arabia has a three pronged battle for survival, fighting Yemen’s Houthis in the South, fighting a domestic insurgency with their Shiite minority in its eastern oil laden provinces, and now …yes, now… facing the potential of an ISIS invasion from the North (as ISIS gets defeated and kicked out of Syria and Iraq).

And wait for it, Iran will have consolidated its regional position. There will be a Shiite Crescent from Tehran though Baghdad to Damascus and Beirut. There will be 4 battle hardened, allied armies and militias – ready to take on Israel. It’s an alliance – even Israel (another American regional ally) – would be scared of.

It is very possible, that Israel might preempt a defeat of this magnitude, and invade Lebanon and Syria, soon. But it would surely be a very risky move for Netanyahu. Very risky.

In effect, the Syrian debacle will have massive consequences for the United States in the region, and eventually on a global scale. If Saudi Arabia AND Turkey are broken up – and undermined; U.S. control of oil and gas markets (that underpin the U.S. dollar) would be compromised. U.S. control of the Dardanelles would be compromised. I could go on and on. The implications of the Syrian debacle are huge. And the master architect was ….. Hillary Clinton. It’s a big problem, and the U.S. electorate has about 9 months to figure this out.

I should point out that I am no fan of Assad’s nor the Russian, nor the Mullahs in Iran; but the destabilization of Syria and the whole region, with an amoral plan – which has caused huge human devastation – without a concrete strategy to guarantee a win for the U.S. – is downright stupid. And the consequences for the U.S. will be devastating too. It’s a debacle on the scale of Iraq – or maybe even larger. It’s one mistake behind another.

Oh and by the way she admits it: “The failure to help build up a credible fighting force of the people who were the originators of the protests against Assad—there were Islamists, there were secularists, there was everything in the middle—the failure to do that left a big vacuum, which the jihadists have now filled,” Clinton said in a recent interview. And yes, she was directly responsible for this policy… this outcome. It’s very clear. It all happened on her watch as Foreign Secretary.

For the record, I am a registered Democrat. I want a Democrat in the White House. I really hate Trump, Cruz …. All the garbage on the Republican side. But, Hillary is no Saint. There is a lot of baggage with Hillary, and the Syrian debacle is fully and squarely her responsibility. And it’s a big deal … far bigger than Benghazi. It’s a big problem for Hillary. She really needs to have a clear idea, a clear plan on what to do. No one expects any leader to NOT make mistakes. But what has she learned? What would she do different? What is her plan for dealing with this debacle? Is it salvageable? What about all those innocent, poor refugees … and the humanitarian cost of this tragedy? There are too many questions, to ask. I honestly can’t imagine a single person running for President that I can fully trust to deal with this debacle and turn a lemon into lemonade. That, my friends, is a very sad statement on the state of the United States.
